I love Lauren Smith Brody's awesome book about returning from leave, The Fifth Trimester, especially her tip on how to not to get overwhelmed. She suggests two simple steps: Ask yourself, 'What do I need right now?' And, then ask for that help.
What do you need right now? A more flexible work schedule. Help cleaning the house. A shoulder to cry on. A walk around the block. A glass of wine. Laughter with good friends. An hour to exercise.
Every person and day will be different. Too often as over-achieving moms, we only ask that question once it's spiraled into something really wrong. But, that helps no one. We need to ask before we've reached the point of overwhelm. And, it's a constant renegotiation.
So today, ask yourself -- What do I need right now? And, make it happen.
